Ninety one golfers, from 46 different school districts, converged on Seven Oaks Golf Club on the campus of Colgate University this morning, all with the intent of capturing the Section III High School Boy’s Golf Championship.
After a brief period of rain, the sun came out and the players hit the links at about 9:00 a.m.
Due to the abnormally rainy spring and soft course conditions, players were allowed to lift, clean and place their ball in the fairway.
Spongy, soft, receptive greens made for some low scoring, a trait not normally exhibited on the lightning fast, Seven Oaks greens.
This past Monday, Section III held East, West and North Division tournaments, for both large and small schools.
The top 28 golfers (and ties) advanced to the overall Sectional Tournament today.
New Hartford sophomore, Alec Bard, shot a 71 at The Skenandoa Club in Clinton, to lead New Hartford to the East Division Large School Title.
New Hartford placed eight golfers in today’s field, more than any other team.
Notre Dame, under Head Coach, Gary Grabinski, finished its most successful season in many years, winning the East Division Small School Title, behind an 80 by Jordan Leogrande.
The Jugglers sent Leogrande and Derek Roback to this morning’s tournament.
After 18 holes of stroke play today, the top 20 golfers will qualify to return on Saturday for the final round, which will decide a champion.
The top 9 golfers after Saturday’s final round will make up Team Section III, which will travel to Cornell University next weekend for the NYSPHAA Boy’s Golf Championship Tournament.
