laxThe Hamilton College Continentals took advantage of eight Utica College penalties, totaling 6:30 minutes of man-up play, then held off a late Pioneers rally and defeated UC by a score of 10-9 in a men’s lacrosse game at Hamilton College.

Connor Morgan and Joe Ricciuti scored three goals apiece to fuel the Continentals attack. Hamilton also benefited from being flagged for just one penalty in sixty minutes of play this afternoon.

The win means that Hamilton College retains the “Contineer Cup”, for the fourth straight time since the local rivalry trophy’s inception back in 2011.

Under brilliant sunny skies, temperatures hovering near 50 degrees and only a foot or so of snow on the bleachers, Hamilton jumped out to the lead quickly in this one.

Utica College’s Zach Stevenson (30) moves in for a second half goal.

Hamilton’s Joe Ricciutti picked up a ground ball and beat Utica goal keeper Andrew Dioro to give the Continentals a 1-0 lead just :23 seconds into the game.

The Continentals were relentless on offense for the remainder of the opening period, getting two goals from Connor Morgan and one from Sam Sweet, to take a 4-0 lead into the second period.

Hamilton also held a 10-3 ground ball advantage over Utica after the first 15 minutes.

The Pioneers got on the board in the second quarter, when TJ Benson took a pass from Zach Stevenson and beat Hamilton goalie Will Driscoll, pulling Utica to within 4-1, with 14:04 to go before half time.

Hamilton’s fast break was on full display on the very next faceoff as the Continentals scored just eight seconds later as Sam Sweet tallied his second goal of the give to increase the home team’s lead back to 5-1, with 13:58 remaining in the second.

Utica College would finish the first half by scoring three of the last four goals of the second quarter.

The Pioneers got goals from Ross Cree, David Craig  and Trent Jacobs, to pull to within 8-4 heading into the intermission.

Hamilton’s first half ground ball advantage was 23-10 after the first 30 minutes.

Pioneers goal keeper Anthony DiOrio (3) plants Hamilton’s Jim Zimmerman (12) stopping a late Hamilton scoring attempt.

The second half showcased the Utica College defense and goal tending, with the Pioneers limiting Hamilton College to just two scores over the final 30 minutes of play.

Unfortunately for UC, Joe Ricciutti’s power play goal, his third tally of the game, with 3:22 to go in the third quarter would prove to be the game winner.

Utica would score the final three goals of the contest, all in the fourth quarter, to close the gap to 10-9, which is the way this one would end.

Not only did the Continentals keep the “Contineer Cup” this afternoon, they also got their first win of the season, improving to (1-3) so far this “spring”.

The Continentals will look to stay in the win column on Saturday when they entertain Bowdoin.

Utica College dropped to (2-1) on the season, after two big wins over SUNYIT and Manhattanville to open the campaign will hit the road on Saturday to take on Kean Universtiy in Union, New Jersey.
