MHTS Summer Fun Tour
The King of Kings Summer Basketball Leagues are heating up around Utica. MHTS caught a terrific High School Division game between “315 Elite” and “Utica Select” at Michael Walsh Gym at Notre Dame High School tonight.
The 2013 King of Kings League consists of eight Men’s Division teams, six Women’s Division teams and six High School Division teams.
The men’s and the women’s teams are made up of some of the best Division I College Basketball players in Upstate New York, including current Syracuse University Players, CJ Fair, Dajuan Coleman and Rakeem Christmas, as well as Colgate University’s, Pat Moore and Nick Pascale.
Tonight’s contest featured two extremely up tempo style teams, in an almost playground like atmosphere.
About 300 people filed into Walsh Gym tonight, where a DJ played music all evening long, even during the game to help keep fans and the game uptempo.
One of the most entertaining points of tonight’s game actually came from off the court, as Doneilous King, Jr., the young son of league founder Doneilous King, worked the wireless microphone, mixing in a little play by play and a little color commentary, much to the liking of the audience, which included a fair dose of college coaches out doing some scouting.
In the overtime, it was more of the J’Von Evans show, as the soon to be Proctor senior, scored 5 of his game high 29 points in the overtime, to lead 315 Elite to a 58-54 win.
Evans scored 21 of those 29 points from outside the three point line!
King of Kings utilizes a :25 second shot clock (10 seconds less that regular high school rules) and the teams play two, twenty minute halves.
Notre Dame High School’s, Kevin Warmack, got 315 Elite going from the guard position in the first half, pouring in 7 points in the first 20 minutes.
Utica Select got 8 first half points from Owen D. Young and Central’s Marty Collins, but 315 Elite went to the half with a 21-19 lead.
315 Elite built leads of as many as 14 points in the second half, largely due to J’Von Evans’ four three pointers.
Ziggy Tracey paced the Select comeback, with 6 points in the final couple of minutes of the contest.
It was all Evans and all 315 Elite in the overtime, taking this one by a score of 58-54.
A long three pointer at the buzzer from Dante Hatem, of Syracuse CBA, pulled Utica Select to within 4 points.
Thanks to Doneilous King and the King of Kings staff for the hospitality and to the players on both clubs for a very entertaining basketball game!
If you’re looking for a very fun atmosphere and some very high quality basketball, get over to a King of Kings contest.
