MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Cobleskill was able to hold off a late surge by host Morrisville State College to sweep the softball double-header with final scores of 9-4 and 5-3 Friday afternoon in Morrisville.
The losses drop the Mustangs to 3-18 overall, 3-9 in conference play.
In game one, Cobleskill posted a combined five runs between the first and second innings en route to their 9-4 victory.
Courtney Purcell (Fabius, N.Y.) led Morrisville State’s efforts from the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while teammateMorgan Plummer (Manahattan, N.Y.) added a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and two runs scored.
Erika Kenney (Duanesburg, N.Y.) recorded the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits and registering three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Morrisville State led 2-0 after the first inning before the Fighting Tigers posted a comeback with a four run fourth inning, and staved off the Mustangs down the stretch to secure the 5-3 conference victory.
Purcell again led the Mustangs efforts from the plate, hitting 1-of-2 for an RBI, adding a run, with teammate Tori Schultz(Camden, N.Y.) added a 1-for-1 effort.
Krista Baxter (Downsville, N.Y.) threw the loss for the Mustangs, posting two strikeouts in the five earned run effort.
Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, hosting SUNYIT for a double-header at 1 p.m. in Morrisville.
UTICA, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College softball team dropped a 23-4 decision to Hamilton College Wednesday night in Utica, following an 11 run third inning by the Continentals.
The Mustangs (0-9) are scheduled to open North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action Friday on their home field against Keuka, but that will be dependent on field conditions and weather.
Courtney Purcell (Fabius, N.Y.) and Jillian Mosley (Salem, N.J.) led the Morrisville State efforts with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate, Mosley collecting two RBI’s, as the Mustangs tallied eight hits in 22 at bats.
Erika Kenney (Duanesburg, N.Y.) threw 2.2 innings in the loss, allowing 13 hits and 12 earned runs, while striking out two, before being relieved by Krista Baxter (Downsville, N.Y.) for the final 2.1 innings. Baxter tallied one strikeout while allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs.
Morrisville State took a 1-0 lead after the first inning on a single from Mosley to left center that scored Liz Miller (East Greenbush, N.Y.).
Hamilton took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning off a three-run homer by Chelsea Merritt. Morrisville State answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, as Miller singled up the middle to score runner Morgan Plummer (Manhattan, N.Y.) cutting the Continentals lead to 3-2.
The floodgates opened in the third and Hamilton took advantage of some hot hitting and seven Mustang errors to open the contest up with 11 additional runs. They picked up where they left off in the fourth inning, adding nine more to their already significant lead before Morrisville State put together a last rally effort in the bottom of the fifth.
With two runners on base, Mosley stepped to the plate and singled to right field to score Taylor Clark (Cambridge, N.Y.), before Purcell advanced home on a throwing error by the right fielder. Morrisville State attempted to get additional runners on base, but the Continental defense forced two straight outs to claim the non-conference win.
