The Deerfield Fire Dept. will host the 2014 New York State Championship Motorized Firematics Competition this coming Saturday, August 16th.
Over 50 Fire Departments from across New York State will compete in what will be the height of the firematics competitive season, with the winners being crowned State Champions and possibly more importantly, decide “who is best at what they do.”
Firematics competition is a great means of training firefighters in a competetive environment, in areas such as battling fire, hose control, hydrant coordination, truck handling, ladder speed and numerous team building skills.
New York firefighters have been competing against each other in these disciplines since the late 1800’s.
In a time when many volunteer departments are having difficulty recruiting people into service, these firematics competitions offer an exciting way for people thinking of joining a department to see all that it has to offer.
Gary DeStefanis, Deerfield Fire Chief, told My Hometown Sports that “New York has a rich history rooted in comradery, trust building, skill development and fellowship among the fire departments. The teams that participate in this event regularly practice their skills to make sure they are more than well prepared for any type emergency situation that may occur in their communities.”
Competition begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Deerfield Firehouse Firematics Stadium Track and continues all day long. Admission to the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
A parade of all competing departments will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and the public is invited to attend.
