The Oneida Indians boy’s volleyball team ran its undefeated season record to (19-0) tonight, defeating local rival, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill three games to none, to claim their second consecutive Section III, Class B championship.
The first seeded Indians put on an offensive power clinic in the first two games, outgunning the second seeded Red Devils 25-8 and 25-9 to take a very quick 2-0 lead in tonight’s final.
VVS simply had no answer for Oneida’s big guns, namely Steve Patricia and Zach Brown, who owned the net tonight.
The CSC-West Division champion Indians also got huge games tonight from Steve Patricia who collected 46 assists and Derek Connelly, who accounted for 12 kills in the onslaught.
Speaking of huge, the crowds who came out in support of both teams in tonight’s contest were outstanding and definitely had an impact on the outcome.
VVS, which completed an excellent season at (15-5), came alive in game 3 tonight, leading much of the way, before falling by a score of 25-21.
The Red Devils refusal to go quietly in the final game is a testament to the determination of the entire team.
Logan Mumford finished with 28 digs to lead VVS this evening.
Oneida has not lost a single game since dropping a frame to Mount Markham on the road, back on January 30th.
The Indians will host Section II’s Ichabod-Crane High School this Saturday in the opening round of the NYSPHAA Tournament.
