netThe Slipper isn’t glass, this one’s definitely a high top Nike and it couldn’t fit the Oriskany boy’s basketball team any better.

The Cinderella story of this year’s Section III Basketball Tournament is definitely Oriskany and boy are these kids relishing every second of it.

The Redskins entered the big dance as the 10th seed out of 15 teams and have been road warriors ever since.

Redskins celebrate win over McGraw!

First, the boys from Oriskany knocked off 7th seeded Hamilton, on the road.

Then the Redskins took a ride up north to Sacket’s Harbor and dismantled the #2 seed, quite comfortably, 54-44.

So, this morning, first year head coach Chris Mahoney put the troops on the bus and headed to the beautiful SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College, for another date with a higher seed.

This time 3rd seeded McGraw was the team standing between Oriskany the Section 3, Class “D” final.

Ryan Schmadel scored a game high 29 points, not many of which were boring and the Redskins pulled out an amazing 62-59, overtime upset win over McGraw.

The Redskins proved early on that they came to play by jumping out to a 15-13 lead after the first eight minutes of action and proved the ride west was worth it, heading into the half still up 31-30.

McGraw came south for a reason and found its rhythm and stride when Ryan Schmadel sat on the bench, saddled with foul problems.

Oriskany went down two, 40-38, when Ryan picked up his third personal foul.

Redskins forward Anthony Warcup (40) starts up for 2 of his 15 points on the afternoon.

The Redskins headed into the fourth and final quarter down a pair of points, 40-38.

The nip and tuck affair really heated up down the stretch as both sides exchanged key buckets and refused to back down.

It looked like the Redskins would seize control on the strength of a quick 8-2 run to jump out to a 46-42 lead with 4:50 to go.

McGraw was big on paper, and they were even bigger on the floor, but that size advantage was quickly matched by the overall team speed of Oriskany, especially at the guard position.

Anthony Warcup connected on four three pointers for Oriskany today, one of which was a decisive blow in overtime, giving Oriskany a 60-54 lead with just :23 seconds left in the extra session, pretty much sealing the deal for Cinderella.

Schmadel, a 6’1″ sophomore, came into today’s matinee averaging over 22 points per game.

netNumber 32 was huge for Oriskany again today, despite playing with three and then four fouls for most of the second half.

Schmadel’s three pointer, with :27 seconds left in regulation, tied the game 52-52 and essentially forced the overtime period.

Warcup scored five of his fifteen points in overtime, helping Oriskany to the three point victory.

McGraw, which was led offensively by Brad Hill, with 15 points, finished the season at (15-3).

Oriskany (12-8) will look to continue the improbable run next Saturday in the Carrier Dome, against a New York Mills team that has beaten them twice already this season.

Well, how else would Cinderella have it? Still see a coach, and no site of a pumpkin.
