UC MEN’S HOCKEY TO TAKE ON OSWEGO STATE AT THE DOME IN FROZEN DOME CLASSIC
Syracuse, NY (June 11, 2014) – The Utica College men’s hockey team will faceoff with regional rival Oswego State on Saturday, Nov. 22 in central New York’s premier athletic stadium, Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome, in a trio of hockey games that is being dubbed as the Frozen Dome Classic.
The Division III contest will precede the American Hockey League game featuring the Syracuse Crunch and the Utica Comets.
“This is a really unique opportunity to play hockey in the Carrier Dome. We’re not quite sure how it’s going to be, but we know it’s going to be spectacular,” says Utica head coach Gary Heenan. “Our players are ecstatic. A lot has been made of the (NHL) Winter Classic and the Stadium Series games. It’ll be a whole new experience for hockey fans. There’s been nothing like this done before.”
Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10:00 a.m. on June 24 and will range in price from $20 to $50. Discount ticket prices are available for groups of 15 or more people. Tickets can be purchased either in person at the Syracuse Crunch Office located at the War Memorial Arena on 800 South State Street in Syracuse, by calling (315) 473- 4444 and at all Ticketmaster Outlets.
“This is going to be an outstanding experience for our student-athletes to be able to participate in such a unique and historic experience at the Carrier Dome,” said Utica College Athletic Director David Fontaine. “Utica College is honored to be a part of this event. We are also excited for our fan base and we are hoping to get as many supporters as possible to come out and cheer on the Pioneers.”
The ice rink will be set up similarly to the Carrier Dome’s basketball configuration. Using this layout, the renowned Carrier Dome can seat more than 30,000 fans. The Carrier Dome is well accustomed to hosting large crowds. Since 1983 the Dome has broken the NCAA’s men’s basketball on-campus attendance record 14 times, most recently when the Syracuse Orange hosted the Duke Blue Devils on Feb. 1, 2014, and 35,446 fans attended.
“The Carrier Dome is one of the most famous venues in all of college sports. We’re really excited to be a part of this – to be a part of bringing hockey to the Dome,” says UC men’s hockey assistant captain Joel Wetmore (Horseheads, NY/Lindsay (OJHL)) ’16. “We’re already counting the days. The fact that we’re playing Oswego just adds to it. With both schools being located less than an hour away and having such great fan bases and so many alumni throughout the region, it should be an amazing atmosphere.”
The Carrier Dome, a 49,262 seat stadium which opened in 1980, is the largest domed stadium in the Northeast United States and is the largest structure of its kind on any college campus in the country. Along with hosting Syracuse University basketball, football and lacrosse games, the “Loud House” has also held concerts featuring famous musical artists such as U2, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones.
