imagesThe New Hartford Spartans got pins in the first three bouts of the evening and held on for a 45-39 victory over Whitesboro in a Section III High School Wrestling match, in front of a huge crowd at Whitesboro High School.

The Spartans took a quick 18-0 lead in the match when Lucas King, Kelan McKenna and Ian McKenna picked up 6 points apiece, pinning their respective opponents.

Lucas King pinned Brian Burdick in a battle of freshman in the 99 lb. weight class, to get things started for the visitors. 

Next up was the 106 lb. bout between New Hartford’s Kelan McKenna, a New Hartford sophomore, and Dominic Dellaposta, also a sophomore.

Kelan McKenna is ranked #1 in Section III at 99 lbs entering tonight’s action and is coming off a huge championship at 99 lbs. in the prestigious Eastern States Wrestling Tournament.

It was all McKenna in this one, who scored a pin of Dellaposta in less than two minutes tonight, giving New Hartford a quick 12-0 lead.

With the win, Kelan McKenna improves to (31-1) on the season. 

The Spartans made it three in row, when Ian McKenna, an eighth grader, and younger brother to Kelan and Sean, pinned Ben Collis in the second period, putting the Spartans up 18-0 after 3 bouts.

logo-lWhitesboro got on the board on the shoulders of Jeff Marraffa, who pinned New Hartford’s Stuart Phillips at the 120 lb. Level.

That win pulled Whitesboro to within 18-6 and improved Marraffa’s individual season record to (27-8), good enough for a number 4 ranking in Section III at 120 lbs. 

Brendan Phillips picked up a big three points for the Spartans at the 126 lb. weight class, with a decision victory over Whitesboro’s Brad  Blum, which increased the Spartans lead to 21-6.

The 132 lb. weight class saw Section III’s #1 ranked wrestler at that weight, Dempsey King, take on Whitesboro’s Jacob White. King took 6 points for New Hartford with a first period pin. That win runs King’s season record to (30-5). 

Sean McKenna, the eldest of the three McKenna brothers on the Spartans squad, pinned Nick Arnold of Whitesboro, in the 138 lb. level, giving the Spartans a 33-6 lead in the match.

Trailing 27-6, the Warriors were in dire need of a win and Zach Levesque came through with a big pin of New Hartford’s Andrew Klockowski in the 145 lb. weight class, pulling Whitesboro back to within 33-12.

Whitesboro’s Landon Slawson, ranked 4th in Section III at 170 lbs. coming into tonight, gave the Warriors another 6 points with a pin of New Hartford’s Kyle Kuty in the 160 lb. bout.

imagesThat win pushed Slawson’s season record to (20-8) and pulled Whitesboro to within 33-19.

Whitesboro’s Dan Knapp decisioned Dan Rabbia at the 170 lb. class, to pull Whitesboro to within 42-33 (after forfeits in a weight class for both teams).

The Spartans got three more from Art Carney, who decisioned Whitesboro’s Walter Greszik in the 182 lb. Bout.

Whitesboro got the final 6 points of the match from Joe Madonia, who pinned New Hartford’s Ryan McCormick in the 285 lb. bout. Madonia ran his record to (20-8) with the win, but it was New Hartford who came away with the 45-39 win.

Both New Hartford and Whitesboro will now head to the Section III, Class “A” Wrestling Tournament this Saturday at Indian River.

The top three finishers in each weight class with qualify for the Section III Championships, next weekend at Onondaga County Community College.
