Whitestown Post scored runs in each of the first five innings of the ball game and came away with a 10-0 win, by mercy rule.
Matt Yozzo started on the bump for Whitestown and worked three complete innings of shutout baseball, striking out 5 and allowing just one hit by Ft. Schuyler, to pick up the win.
Kevin Flynn came in relief of Yozzo in the top of the fourth and worked two scoreless innings, while yielding just two hits.
Whitestown grabbed the lead early in this one and never looked back. Adam Pexton laced a triple to the right field wall on the first pitch of the game from Ft. Schuyler starter, J.P. Gilroy.
After Mike Jardieu was hit by a pitch, Pexton scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Matt Black, which moved Jardieu to third with one away.
Jardieu later scored on a past ball, to make it 2-0 Whitestown, before Gilroy settled down and got the next two Whitestown hitters out on strikes.
WP 1113 tacked on four more in the bottom of the second. Dean Sokolowski smacked a one out single, followed by consecutive walks to Andrew Sharpe, Alex Brown and Pexton, to make it 3-0.
A fielder’s choice, off the bat of Jardieu, scored Sharpe to make it 4-0, but Pexton was out at second base.
Yozzo was perfect in the third inning, getting the first three Ft. Schuyler hitters he faced out on just 11 pitches.
Whitestown made it 7-0 in the home half of the third, when Joe Latella drew a one out walk, reached second on a past ball and later scored on a wild pitch, with the bases loaded.
After Flynn made quick work of the Ft. Schuyler offense in the top of the fourth, Whitestown made it 8-0, in the home half of the frame.
Mike Jardieu drew a leadoff walk and scored on a past ball and a series of throwing errors.
Whitestown finished the deal in the bottom of the fifth, when Andrew Sharpe and Alex Brown drew consecutive walks off of reliever Ryan Lupia.
Matt Black’s ground ball to third base scored Alex Brown for the 10th and final run of the ball game. Mike Cooperwheat, JP Gilroy and Jared Hensel had the only hits for Fort Schuyler Post.
With the win, Whitestown improves to (12-10) overall and (8-6) in division play. Ft. Schuyler drops to (13-6) overall and (11-3) in District V.
Presently, Ft. Schuyler holds the #2 seed for the upcoming District V playoffs and Whitestown sits at #7.
Both teams are assured a spot in the 8 team, double elimination playoffs, which begin on Monday, 7/22.
